2014: +630 million, >50% penetration (average 82% US, 61% Europe, +83% France)

E-commerce

  • Online shoppers reached +400million
  • Online shopping turnover totalled 754.2 billion yuan ($123.2 billion), with a YoY growth of 47.3%.
  • E-commerce represented 6.8% of total consumer goods retail sales as of Dec 2013

The online shopping market is estimated to reach 1.74 trillion RMB ($278.4 billion) in 2014
> Update as of December 2013: +42% in 2012, RMB 1.85 trillion ($305 billion)

  • Online retail sales grew 35% in the first nine months of 2013 YOY, and equal $212.4 billion
  • In B2C, Tmall led the market with 50.4%, followed by Jingdong with 20.7% and Suning with 5.7%
  • C2C market is led by Taobao with a 95.1% market share

By 2016, China’s total online retail will reach 5 trillion (RMB), accounting for 12% of total sales
By 2020, China’s total online retail will reach 10 trillion (RMB), accounting for 16% of total sales, and China’s e-commerce (including online B2B transactions) will reach 30 trillion (RMB)

Mobile

As of December 2013

  • 1.25 billion users
  • 417 million 3G subscribers (+79% vs Dec 2012)
  • +500 million Mobile internet users (vs 460 million in July 2013), 750 million expected by 2017

– Fastest growing activities (2013) :
1/ online video viewing: +17% to 247M, 2/ online shopping: +16% in 2013 to 144M, 3/ online payment: 12% to 125M

N°1 China Mobile: 767.2 million – N°2 China Unicom: 281 million – N°3 China Telecom: 185.6 million

By the end of 2013,
– China mobile e-commerce is expected to reach 130 billion yuan ($21 billion) vs 53.2 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) as of June 2013 (+44.1% YoY)
– Mobile shoppers should reach 155 million vs 78.05 million as of June 2013

Bigger smartphone screen and better webpage design have improved user experience, the app development, QR code, mobile payment, and ability of mobile phones to provide localized e-commerce services, all contributed to shorten shopping procedures and improve mobile shopping convenience.

Mobile Apps

  • WeChat (Tencent): +500 million users, 355 being active
  • +100 million registered abroad : still, same as July 2013…
  • Leading Independant App Stores: AppChina, Anzhi, Gfan, Hiapk, Liqucn, Wandoujia, eoemarket

Country Growth Perspectives

  •  +/- 180 cities of +1M inhabitants
